President appoints Justice Soumen Sen as Meghalaya Chief Justice; Justice Sujoy Paul to act as Calcutta High Court Chief Justice.

In a fresh round of judicial appointments, the President of India has cleared the transfer of senior judge Justice Soumen Sen from the Calcutta High Court to head the Meghalaya High Court as its new Chief Justicemeghalaya.

The order was issued late on 26 September 2025, and he will assume charge once he formally takes office.

The vacancy at Calcutta High Court, left open by Sen's move, won't remain unattended. Justice Sujoy Paul, another senior judge of the same court, has been asked to take charge as Acting Chief Justice under Article 223 of the Constitution.

This arrangement ensures continuity until a permanent appointment is made.

The official notification, circulated to the Governor and Chief Minister's offices of both West Bengal and Meghalaya, was also sent to the Supreme Court and Rashtrapati Bhavan. For Kolkata's legal fraternity, this means a transition phase, while Shillong will soon welcome a new head for its judiciary.

Court's order ends with the clear direction: Justice Soumen Sen will be Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, and Justice Sujoy Paul will perform duties as Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court.
