In a significant move, the Gujarat High Court has formally notified "The High Court of Gujarat (Designation of Senior Advocates) Rules, 2025", replacing all earlier frameworks governing the process. The notification, published in the state gazette on September 17, lays down detailed eligibility conditions, application procedures, and grounds for review or recall of the senior advocate title
The bench observed,
"An advocate must have at least 20 years of standing at the Bar, be not less than 45 years old, and show special knowledge, reputation and pro bono work."
Another judge added that professional misconduct or behaviour unbecoming of the dignity of the Court could lead to the recall of the designation.
Applications will now be invited annually through the High Court's website, requiring endorsements from two existing senior advocates. The rules also bar designated seniors from filing vakalatnamas or directly accepting clients, directing them instead to work with assisting lawyers and mentor juniors.
Concluding the notification, the Court ordered:
"All previous rules and guidelines stand repealed; the present rules shall come into effect immediately upon publication in the gazette."
