IB Officer Sukanth Suresh, who has been accused of abetting the suicide of his colleague and girlfriend, has moved the Kerala High Court with a plea to stop the police from leaking sensitive materials related to the ongoing investigation.
According to Suresh, the investigation agency had full control over the materials and selectively released some to the media, which has led to serious concerns. His petition follows the publication of certain chat messages in Malayalam newspapers, which he believes were leaked from the records held by the Pettah Police Station, the second respondent in the case.
“These materials, including chats allegedly retrieved from a deleted social media account, were submitted by the agency during my bail hearing,” Suresh said.
He claims these details were published the very next day, on May 24, 2025, just after the Court reserved the bail order. He alleges this was a deliberate leak aimed at creating public anger and harming the judicial process.
"This is a gross misuse of the investigative process and an intentional act to damage my image and influence the court," Suresh told the High Court.
In his plea, he mentions violations of several legal provisions:
- Section 31 of the Kerala Police Act, 2011 – which deals with the misconduct of police officers,
- Section 228A of the IPC – which prohibits disclosure of identity in certain offences, and
- Section 193 of BNSS – related to fabricating evidence.
“The unauthorised release of such materials to the media is not only illegal but also damages the reputation and rights of the accused,” he argued in court.
The Kerala High Court had denied bail to Suresh on May 26, 2025. Now, he is seeking the Court’s direction to:
- Call for a detailed report from the Pettah Police Station.
- Order a higher-level inquiry into the alleged leaks by the second respondent.
The matter is being heard under Bail Application 5091/2025, titled Sukanth Suresh P. v State of Kerala and Others. The case is attracting wide public and legal attention, as it involves questions about investigative fairness, media ethics, and the rights of the accused.
“I request the Hon’ble Court to protect the integrity of the legal process and direct strict action against those misusing their position,” Suresh concluded in his petition.
The Kerala High Court is expected to hear the matter soon and decide whether an inquiry into the leak should be initiated.
