In a brief but tense hearing on Friday, the Supreme Court asked Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami to respond to a petition filed by his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, who is seeking a higher monthly alimony. The case, already known to the public for its emotional and sometimes messy turns, once again came under national spotlight as the bench examined whether the current maintenance amount was suitable considering Shami’s earnings and lifestyle.
Background
Hasin Jahan and Mohammad Shami have been embroiled in a legal and personal dispute since 2018. Their marital conflict spilled into the media with allegations ranging from domestic violence to harassment. Over the years, both sides have provided conflicting narratives, and the matter has shifted between family court, the Calcutta High Court, and now the Supreme Court.

Currently, as per the Calcutta High Court's direction, Shami pays ₹4 lakh per month-₹1.5 lakh to Jahan and ₹2.5 lakh for their daughter. Jahan argues that this amount does not reflect Shami’s current income, lifestyle, and public stature as an active international cricketer.
Court’s Observations
During the hearing, Jahan’s counsel Imtiaz Ahmed stated that Shami’s annual income crosses ₹7 crore, while Jahan herself earns only ₹16,000 per month. He further told the bench that her total expenses for living, legal proceedings, and their child come close to ₹6 lakh monthly, making the current amount insufficient.
The bench, however, commented cautiously. One of the judges said, “The interim amount appears quite handsome at first look, but we will consider your submissions in detail.”
Shami’s lawyer, Sandipan Ganguly, countered that Jahan was exaggerating her financial difficulties and that the petition felt like “playing to the gallery.” He maintained Shami has been complying with all court directions and that the portrayal of him as neglectful was unfair.
There were no dramatic exchanges, but there was a certain weight in the room-likely because the matter touches on personal dignity, public image, and the private life of a national sports figure.

Decision
After hearing both sides, the Supreme Court did not pass any immediate order to modify or suspend the High Court ruling. Instead, the bench decided to seek formal responses.
The court issued notices to Mohammad Shami and the State of West Bengal and granted them time to file detailed replies.
The matter will be taken up again after the responses are submitted.
The hearing concluded at that point, with the court making no further directions.
