Allahabad HC to Young Lawyers: Prioritise Legal Practice Over Social Media Popularity

The Allahabad High Court has urged young advocates to concentrate on their legal studies and case preparation rather than seeking popularity on social media, amid protests that disrupted court proceedings. Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal made the observations while hearing a bail application on October 30, 2026.

In Rajesh v. State of U.P., the Court noted that the applicant's counsel was absent despite the matter having been mentioned for an early hearing. The judge recorded that some advocates had allegedly prevented lawyers from entering the courtroom to argue their cases and had forcibly removed government advocates.

The order also referred to a woman advocate who was allegedly stopped from entering the courtroom despite wanting to appear in her case. Justice Deshwal expressed concern over the effect of such conduct on the reputation of the legal profession and the judiciary.

The Court made its position clear, stating,

Court Book subscription: bare acts, legal drafts, court judgments and ad-free legal news, plans from ₹30/month
"the proceedings of the Court cannot be allowed to be stalled merely because a section of advocates does not want the Court to function, although the majority of advocates want to argue their cases."

The judge also took note of social media posts by certain young advocates concerning the High Court's functioning. He cautioned that incomplete or distorted information could deepen differences between lawyers and judges.

Emphasising the importance of professional development, the Court observed,

"Young advocates should concentrate on their studies as well as on preparing their cases to build their careers instead of concentrating on increasing their social media likes."

Justice Deshwal further stressed that maintaining public confidence in the judiciary was a shared responsibility of judges and advocates. The order explained,

"This Court is also of the view that it is not only the duty of the Judges but also of the advocates to maintain the dignity of the High Court so that public trust in the High Court may remain."

The High Court expected the newly elected Allahabad High Court Bar Association to consider the issue and take appropriate steps to uphold the institution's dignity.

In the bail matter, the Court adjourned the proceedings for the day and directed that the application be listed on November 26, 2026.
