Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Steps Down from PIL Hearing Against Ex-Kolkata Police Chief Over RG Kar Case

The Calcutta High Court Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam withdrew from hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. The PIL accused Goyal of publicly revealing the identity of a deceased rape victim in the high-profile RG Kar Hospital case. Justice Sivagnanam cited “personal reasons” for recusing himself during a division bench hearing on Thursday, prompting the case to be reassigned to another bench.

Background of the RG Kar Hospital Case

The controversy traces back to the brutal rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate medical student at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident triggered nationwide outrage, with protests erupting across the city demanding justice. Critics accused the Kolkata Police, then led by Vineet Goyal, of mishandling the case. Allegations included attempts to suppress evidence and failure to control violent protests that led to hospital vandalism.

Following public pressure, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The agency began its probe just a day before the hospital premises were ransacked during a protest march.

With the PIL now redirected to another bench, activists and legal observers await further hearings.
