The Calcutta High Court has directed the police to continue efforts to arrest Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel and another accused in connection with a criminal case filed by a woman. The Court also ordered the immediate seizure of their electronic devices to ensure that any alleged intimate photographs or videos of the complainant are not circulated during the investigation.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya issued the directions on July 14, 2026, while hearing a petition seeking a proper investigation into the case.
Background of the Case
According to the petition, the complainant alleged that Abishek Porel established a physical relationship with her after assuring her that they would marry. She further claimed that their private moments were recorded without her consent and that those materials were later allegedly used to threaten and intimidate her.
An FIR was registered at Mogra Police Station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The complainant approached the High Court contending that despite the seriousness of the allegations, the investigating agency had not yet secured the electronic devices that could contain crucial evidence.
During the hearing, the Court noted that both accused had not yet been apprehended despite police efforts. It also considered the complainant's concern that the alleged digital material could be disseminated if the devices were not seized promptly.
Justice Bhattacharyya observed,
“Concerned police authorities are directed to continue with their endeavour to apprehend respondent nos. 6 & 7 and to make seizure of devices so obnoxious data stored therein shall not be further disseminated.”
The Court directed the investigating agency to take immediate steps to secure the electronic devices, including mobile phones and other digital equipment, to protect the complainant's privacy and preserve evidence relevant to the investigation.
The High Court directed the police to continue efforts to trace and arrest Abishek Porel and the other accused and to immediately seize their electronic devices.
It further instructed the investigating agency to file a compliance report detailing the action taken before the next date of hearing.
