Centre Notifies Elevation of Justices N V Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi & Atul S Chandurkar as Supreme Court Judges

The Central Government has officially announced the elevation of three distinguished High Court judges to the Supreme Court of India. The appointed judges are:

  • Justice N V Anjaria, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, who hails from the Gujarat High Court.
  • Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, originally from the Rajasthan High Court.
  • Justice Atul S Chandurkar, a sitting judge of the Bombay High Court.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed the appointments in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:

"In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint S/Shri Justices (i) N.V. Anjaria, Chief Justice, High Court of Karnataka, (ii) Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice, High Court of Gauhati, and (iii) A.S. Chandurkar, Judge, High Court of Bombay as Judges of the Supreme Court of India."

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the elevation of these judges on May 26. This move restores the Supreme Court’s full sanctioned strength of 34 judges.

It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court will soon face a new vacancy as Justice Bela M Trivedi is set to retire on June 9, 2025. Following her, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia will retire on August 9, 2025, and Chief Justice of India BR Gavai will step down on November 23, 2025.

The appointments reflect the Government’s continued efforts to maintain the efficiency and strength of the Supreme Court, ensuring the timely delivery of justice.
