The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (21 July) permitted activist Sonam Wangchuk to be shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital after reviewing medical reports and hearing doctors from multiple hospitals. The Court said there was a common medical opinion that Wangchuk required continuous monitoring due to his ongoing hunger strike.
Background of the Case
The appeal was filed by Dr. Gitanjali J. Angmo, challenging a single-judge order that had refused to allow Wangchuk's transfer to a private hospital. She argued that Wangchuk wished to receive treatment at Medanta and raised concerns regarding his stay at Safdarjung Hospital.
After examining reports from Safdarjung Hospital, AIIMS and Wangchuk's treating doctors, the Bench found that regular medical supervision was necessary.
The Bench observed,
"After interacting with the doctors, what we understand is that there is a consensus that constant monitoring is needed. We propose to shift him to Medanta, the hospital of his choice."
During the hearing, the Centre informed the Court that it had no objection to the transfer. Doctors also highlighted concerns over Wangchuk's low potassium, reduced white blood cell count and other medical parameters that required close observation.
Accepting the consensus of the medical experts, the Delhi High Court directed that Sonam Wangchuk be shifted to Medanta Hospital, where he would continue treatment.
The Court also ordered that all treatment records and medical reports from Safdarjung Hospital be immediately shared with the new medical team.
