The Delhi High Court issued summons in a copyright and trademark infringement suit filed by Bennett Coleman and Company Limited (BCCL), owner of Times Now Navbharat, against Network18 Media and journalist Sushant Sinha. The dispute concerns Network18's news analysis programme "Desh Ki Pathshala," which BCCL alleges closely resembles its show "News Ki Pathshala."
Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani also issued notice on BCCL's application seeking interim relief but said the request would be considered only after the defendants file their replies.
Background
BCCL told the Court that Sushant Sinha had hosted "News Ki Pathshala" while working with Times Now Navbharat before leaving the channel in April 2026 to join Network18. According to the company, the newly launched "Desh Ki Pathshala" follows a similar presentation style, visual identity, classroom-themed format, and programme structure, thereby infringing its trademark and copyright.
Senior Advocate Hemant Singh, appearing for BCCL, argued that the similarities extended beyond the title and covered the overall expression of the programme, including digital classroom elements, chapter-based presentation and other creative features.
Court Observation
During the hearing, the Court examined the competing programme marks after Network18 argued that the word "Pathshala" had been used in television programmes long before Times Now Navbharat adopted it.
Justice Bhambhani observed, "Look and feel is another aspect," while hearing submissions on whether the expression could claim exclusive protection. The Court did not express any final opinion on the rival claims at this stage.
Decision
The High Court issued summons to Network18 and Sushant Sinha, directing them to file their written statements within 30 days. It also issued notice on BCCL's plea seeking an interim injunction and clarified that the request for interim relief would be considered only after receiving the defendants' responses.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on August 25, 2026.
