The Delhi High Court has issued notice to journalist Sudhir Chaudhary and other defendants in a defamation suit filed by activist and UPSC aspirant Vijay Sherawat over a broadcast on DD News.
Justice Subramonium Prasad heard the matter on September 7, 2026, and also issued notice on Sherawat’s plea seeking interim protection against further publication or circulation of the disputed broadcast.
Background of the Case
Sherawat has alleged that an episode of Chaudhary’s programme “Decode”, aired on July 27, 2026, wrongly identified him with statements made during a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest.
According to his case, the broadcast attributed statements to him suggesting that Parliament would be destroyed and India would be turned into “Nepal”. Sherawat maintains that he did not make those statements and that another person was shown in the footage.
The suit seeks damages of ₹5 crore and restraint against further publication and circulation of the alleged defamatory material.
The High Court directed that the plaint be registered as a suit and issued notice to the defendants, including Chaudhary and the concerned news broadcaster. The Court also took up Sherawat’s application seeking interim relief.
“It is expected that on the next date of hearing, Defendants 1, 2 and 3 would be ready for advancing arguments on the interim stay.”
The matter has been listed for September 22, 2026, when the defendants are expected to advance arguments on Sherawat’s request for interim relief.
