The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (21 July) declined to urgently hear a public interest litigation alleging that Delhi Police used excessive force against protesters during the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) "Sansad Chalo" march in the national capital. The Court said the matter would be taken up through the regular process instead of granting immediate listing.
The petition was filed after protests at Jantar Mantar and nearby areas, where students and activists gathered to demand accountability for repeated examination paper leaks and sought the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
As protesters attempted to march towards Parliament, Delhi Police stopped them. The plea alleged that police action, including the use of force, resulted in injuries to several protesters.
The matter was mentioned before a Division Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia.
Refusing an urgent hearing, the Bench remarked,
“Don’t drag Court into all this. It will come up tomorrow.”
The Court did not examine the allegations on merits during the brief mentioning.
The Delhi High Court declined the request for urgent listing and directed that the petition be taken up on the following day in the normal course.
