Danielle McLaughlin, hailing from Donegal in Northwest Ireland, was traveling through Goa in March 2017 when she met Bhagat. According to court documents, the two spent an evening together before Bhagat brutally attacked her. Prosecutors revealed that he struck her repeatedly with a stone, causing fatal head injuries. Her body was later found in a secluded area in Canacona, South Goa, with severe wounds to her face and skull.

The prosecution presented forensic evidence, witness testimonies, and digital records linking Bhagat to the crime. The court emphasized the "premeditated and inhuman nature" of the act, describing it as a "grave violation of human dignity."
