The Supreme Court on September 15, granted Bollywood actor Rajpal Naurang Yadav two more weeks to deposit ₹5 crore with the Court Registry in connection with multiple cheque dishonour cases. The Bench also extended his protection from surrendering until October 5.
Background of the Case
Yadav has challenged the Delhi High Court's decision concerning seven cheque dishonour cases arising from a financial dispute with M/s Murli Projects Pvt Ltd. The High Court had upheld his conviction and imposed three months' imprisonment in each case, with the sentences to run concurrently.
On September 8, the Supreme Court had temporarily exempted Yadav from surrendering, subject to the condition that ₹5 crore be deposited with the Registry.
During Tuesday's hearing, Senior Advocate P.S. Patwalia, appearing for Yadav, sought two more weeks to comply with the condition.
The Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana expressed reservations while considering the request.
The Court observed:
"He is an actor in Bollywood. We hope he is not acting here also. His past conduct does not inspire confidence. As a last opportunity, two weeks' time is granted to honor the order. Post the matter thereafter."
The Court also directed Yadav to submit his passport.
The Supreme Court granted two weeks' additional time to deposit ₹5 crore with the Registry and continued his exemption from surrender until October 5, 2026. The matter was directed to be listed thereafter.
