Justice Sathya Narayana Prasad, a sitting judge of the Madras High Court, passed away at the age of 56 in Chennai late on May 6, 2025. According to sources, the judge suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and was rushed to a private hospital, where he was declared dead.
Justice Sathya Narayana Prasad had been serving as a judge of the Madras High Court since 2021. He was initially appointed as an additional judge on October 27, 2021. Recognizing his service and dedication, he was confirmed as a permanent judge on March 3, 2023.
“Justice Sathya Narayana Prasad was known for his deep knowledge of law, commitment to justice, and balanced judgments,” said sources familiar with the legal fraternity.
His legal journey began in 1997 when he enrolled as an advocate. Coming from a family deeply rooted in the legal profession, he was the son of a District and Sessions Judge. Before his elevation to the bench, Justice Prasad served as a panel counsel for several government and private organizations, where he handled a range of legal matters.

His dedication to the profession and humility were well-recognized among his peers and juniors, said a lawyer who had worked with him during his early days as an advocate.
The untimely passing of Justice Prasad has left the legal community in shock. Judges, lawyers, court staff, and members of the bar expressed grief over his sudden demise. Several advocates who had appeared before him described him as patient, fair, and meticulous in his approach.
“He always ensured that every party was heard with equal respect in the courtroom,” said a senior advocate.
The Madras High Court is expected to hold a condolence meeting in memory of Justice Prasad. His contribution to the judiciary and his sense of duty will be remembered by the legal fraternity for years to come.
