President Approves Appointment of New Chief Justice for Bombay High Court

The Union Ministry of Law and Justice on 4 September 2025 announced the appointment of Justice S. Chandrashekhar as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Justice Chandrashekhar, a senior Judge of the same court, has been elevated under Article 217(1) of the Constitution.

The official notification said,

"The President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice S. Chandrashekhar, Judge of the Bombay High Court, to be Chief Justice… with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office."

While the order was procedural, legal experts welcomed the move. A senior advocate remarked,

"The High Court needed experienced leadership, and Justice Chandrashekhar fits the role."

The appointment will take effect once he assumes charge in Mumbai. Copies of the notification have been circulated to state and central authorities, marking the start of his tenure as Chief Justice.
