The Supreme Court Collegium has approved the proposal to appoint six Additional Judges of the High Court of Bombay as Permanent Judges, marking an important administrative development in the higher judiciary.
The decision was taken during the Collegium meeting held on May 18, 2026.
According to the official statement issued after the meeting, the Collegium approved the names of:
- Ms. Justice Nivedita Prakash Mehta,
- Shri Justice Prafulla Surendrakumar Khubalkar,
- Shri Justice Ashwin Damodar Bhobe,
- Shri Justice Rohit Wasudeo Joshi,
- Shri Justice Advait Mahendra Sethna, and
- Shri Justice Pravin Sheshrao Patil.
The statement noted that the proposal for their appointment as Permanent Judges of the Bombay High Court had been cleared after consideration by the Collegium.
Five of the judges — Ms. Justice Nivedita Prakash Mehta, Shri Justice Prafulla Surendrakumar Khubalkar, Shri Justice Ashwin Damodar Bhobe, Shri Justice Rohit Wasudeo Joshi and Shri Justice Advait Mahendra Sethna — were elevated as Additional Judges in October 2024 after being appointed from the Bar. They assumed office on October 25, 2024.
Justice Pravin Sheshrao Patil was appointed as an Additional Judge in January 2025 following a separate recommendation made by the Collegium in December 2024.
The recommendation will now be forwarded to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice for further processing before the President of India issues the formal warrants of appointment.
