Supreme Court Issues Contempt Notice to 50+ Delhi Hospitals Over Alleged Violation of Free Treatment Rules

The Supreme Court has issued show-cause notices to more than 50 hospitals in Delhi for allegedly violating its earlier order related to obligations imposed on hospitals that received government land on concessional terms. The court warned that contempt proceedings could follow if violations are confirmed.

A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and N.V. Anjaria noted that authorities had failed to take strict action despite hospitals reportedly breaching the court’s 2018 directions. The court said the matter appeared to have been handled “very casually.”

To ensure enforcement, the court appointed the Secretary, Health Department of the Delhi Government as the Nodal Officer to coordinate action and report compliance. The court has asked hospitals to explain why contempt proceedings should not be initiated and why government concessions should not be withdrawn.
