Supreme Court Justice Sanjay Kumar on October 29 restricted advocates from approaching officers attached to his court, either personally or over the telephone, following an alleged abusive call made by an Advocate-on-Record’s son to a woman court officer.
The incident came up during mentioning proceedings in Court No. 8. Justice Kumar questioned the advocate about his son’s conduct and expressed displeasure over the language allegedly used during the telephone conversation.
The judge questioned whether the advocate had taught his son how to speak respectfully to women and criticised the remarks directed at the court officer.
Expressing concern for court staff, Justice Kumar said,
“I will not have my Court Officers being abused like this!”
He emphasised that officers perform their duties diligently and should not face abusive language or insinuations while carrying out their work.
The judge also referred to the possibility of bringing the matter before the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA), raising concerns about professional conduct and accountability.
Justice Kumar directed that physical appearances would be provided immediately after the conclusion of cases. He further prohibited advocates from approaching or contacting his court officers in person or by telephone regarding such matters.
The restriction was announced during the court proceedings.
