The Supreme Court on Thursday (6 August) declined to further relax the bail conditions imposed on Ashish Mishra, an accused in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. The Court rejected his request seeking permission to ease travel restrictions for attending family functions, including his daughter's birthday.
The case arises from the October 3, 2021 incident in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, where eight people lost their lives during violence linked to a farmers' protest.
Ashish Mishra is facing trial in connection with the case and was granted regular bail in 2024 subject to travel and residence restrictions.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohan observed,
"There is no ground to entertain this prayer at this stage."
The Court dismissed the application, while also indicating that concerns regarding the conduct of the trial should first be raised before the trial court.
The Supreme Court dismissed Ashish Mishra's plea, holding that there was no reason at this stage to further relax the bail conditions already imposed.
