The Supreme Court has refused to suspend former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal’s 10-year prison sentence in the 2013 rape case.
A Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Prasanna B. Varale observed:
"We are not inclined to grant suspension of the sentence at this stage, as the case does not warrant such relief on a preliminary assessment. Accordingly, the applications seeking suspension of the sentence stand dismissed."
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Tejpal, asked when the Court might reconsider the request.
The Bench responded:
"We can’t give a stage now."
The Bombay High Court had overturned Tejpal’s 2021 acquittal and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment.
This is a developing story.
