The Supreme Court has stayed the trial proceedings in the death case of Twisha Sharma, while considering her father’s plea to transfer the case from Bhopal to Delhi. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and other respondents.
The Court directed that the trial on merits remain stayed, while bail applications filed by the two accused be decided within two weeks.
Twisha Sharma, 33, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, 2026, around five months after marrying lawyer Samarth Singh. Her husband and mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, a retired district judge, are facing prosecution in the case.
Her father, Navnidhi Sharma, has sought the transfer of the trial to Delhi, citing concerns about the possibility of a fair trial in Madhya Pradesh and the influence allegedly enjoyed by one of the accused. He has also stated that his family is settled in the Delhi-NCR region.
The Supreme Court had earlier intervened in the matter, following concerns about the investigation, and the probe was subsequently transferred to the CBI.
While issuing notice, the bench ordered,
“While trial proceedings on merits shall remain stayed, the bail applications filed by respondent 2 and 3 are to be decided within two weeks.”
The trial before the Bhopal sessions court had reached the stage of arguments on framing of charges.
The Court’s order pauses proceedings on the merits of the case while requiring the pending bail applications to be decided within the specified period.
The Supreme Court stayed the trial proceedings, issued notice to the respondents on the transfer petition, and directed that the two bail applications be decided within two weeks.
