Former Delhi Mayor Farhad Suri has approached the Supreme Court alleging that a large team of Ghaziabad Police entered his Delhi residence late at night while allegedly searching for journalist Abhishek Upadhyay.
Suri’s plea concerns an alleged incident at his Nizamuddin East residence during the intervening night of August 22 and 23. According to the petition, the police team, led by Ghaziabad Assistant Commissioner of Police Suryabali Maurya, reached the house at around 12:45 am.
Suri claims the police initially told him they were searching for a person wanted in a double-murder case registered in Indirapuram. When he asked the officers to produce a search warrant, they allegedly could not do so.
The petition further states that Suri contacted the SHO of Hazrat Nizamuddin Police Station. He was allegedly informed that the local police had only been told about a UP Police team visiting Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station and were not informed about any proposed search of his residence.
Suri says he later learnt that the police action was connected with FIR No. 678/2026 registered at Indirapuram Police Station, in which journalist Abhishek Upadhyay is named.
“The petitioner seeks appropriate directions for registration of an FIR against the police officials and for an independent investigation into the entire incident,” the plea states.
Suri has alleged that his complaint to the Delhi Police seeking registration of an FIR was not acted upon. He has sought preservation and examination of CCTV footage, call records, wireless communications and vehicle records to establish what happened that night.
He has also sought identification of the police personnel and other persons allegedly involved in the operation.
The plea comes shortly after the Supreme Court granted Upadhyay protection from coercive action in the Ghaziabad FIR. A three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant had directed that no coercive action be taken against him and posted the matter for September 7.
Suri has also asked the Supreme Court to frame safeguards for inter-State police operations, particularly searches of residential premises.
The petition has been placed before the Supreme Court seeking directions for an independent investigation and registration of an FIR concerning the alleged midnight police operation.
