Section 240

Naming of Streets and Numbering of Houses

(1) The Municipality may from time to time put up or paint on a conspicuous part of any building at or near each end, corner or entrance to every street and public place the name by which such street or public place is to be known: Provided that it shall be lawful for the State Government to issue directions to the Municipality for naming of any street, colony, Mohala, Market, Bazar, bridge, flyover, garden or any other public place or way by specific name and such directions shall be binding on the Municipality. (2) The Municipality may from time to time fix number plate in a conspicuous place on the main entrance of outer side of the building and the cost of the plate shall be borne by the house owner. (3) Any person who destroys, pulls down or defaces any such name or number plate or puts any name or number different from that put up by the Municipality shall, on conviction, be punished with fine which shall not be less than one thousand rupees but which may extend to two thousand rupees.
