The Calcutta High Court has stepped in to ensure peaceful Saraswati Puja celebrations at Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College in Kolkata. In a significant ruling, Justice Jay Sengupta directed local police to provide full security during the festivities. The court also ordered strict measures to prevent disruptions, including barring outsiders from entering the campus.
The court’s decision came after a group of students filed a plea, alleging threats from external individuals trying to stop the event. To address these concerns, Justice Sengupta issued the following orders:
Police Protection Mandatory: Kolkata Police must deploy adequate personnel to ensure safety during the puja. A commissioner-level officer will supervise arrangements, reflecting the court’s emphasis on accountability.
No Entry for Outsiders: The court strictly prohibited outsiders, including individuals with pending complaints, from entering the campus. This aims to prevent potential conflicts and maintain order.
Separate Pujas for Departments: The college was instructed to organize distinct Saraswati Puja ceremonies for the law department and other departments. This avoids overcrowding and ensures smooth proceedings.
Demolition of Illegal Pandal: Authorities were directed to demolish a pandal (temporary structure) built illegally on campus. The court stressed adherence to legal norms for public safety.
“The safety of students and the sanctity of cultural events must be upheld. External interference will not be tolerated,” Justice Sengupta stated,
