Chhattisgarh High Court Slams Road Birthday Celebrations: Calls for Strict Action Against Public Nuisance

Chhattisgarh High Court Takes Strong Stand Against Dangerous Road Celebrations

The Chhattisgarh High Court has taken serious note of a viral birthday celebration in Raipur that blocked traffic and disrupted public order. Acting on a news report from Dainik Bhaskar and social media footage, the court condemned the trend of using roads for personal celebrations, calling it a "fashion" that endangers lives.

Incident Details: Fireworks, Traffic Chaos, and Police Inaction

On the day of the incident, a group celebrated a birthday by parking a car in the middle of Raipur’s Raipura Chowk, cutting a cake, and setting off fireworks. This caused a massive traffic snarl, leaving commuters stranded. The court highlighted that the boy celebrating the birthday was the son of a local supermarket owner, whose family participated in the event.

Despite the clear violation of traffic rules, police only imposed a minimal fine—₹300 for road blockage and another ₹300 for fireworks. The court slammed this response as “mockery of law and order,” questioning why the vehicle wasn’t seized or stricter action taken.

A bench led by Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Ravindra Kumar Agrawal emphasized:

“Roads belong to the public, not individuals. Using them for personal joy risks lives. Imagine an ambulance stuck because of such nonsense—patients could die. This ‘trend’ for social media views is reckless and must stop.”

The judges expressed shock at the police’s leniency toward influential offenders, stating:

“It seems rules apply only to the poor. When the rich break laws, authorities look away. This erodes public trust.”

The court ordered the Chief Secretary to submit a personal affidavit detailing actions taken against the offenders, plans to prevent similar incidents, and measures to ensure equitable enforcement of law, regardless of social status. The matter will next be heard on February 6, with the court warning that laxity boosts the morale of offenders.
