Delhi HC Disposes of PIL Over Use of ‘Shoorveer’ Song in Mirzapur: The Movie After Its Removal

The Delhi High Court has disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) concerning the use of the song “Shoorveer,” associated with Maharana Pratap and his followers, as background music in Mirzapur: The Movie. The Court accepted the submission that the musical composition had already been removed from the film and held that no further orders were required on the issue.

The petition was filed by Prashant Kumar Singh in Prashant Kumar Singh v. Union of India & Ors., seeking directions to remove “Shoorveer” from the climax scene of the movie. The petition raised concerns over the song’s use in the film, given its association with the heroic legacy of Maharana Pratap and his followers.

During the hearing, counsel for respondent no. 3 informed the Court that the song had already been removed and was no longer played in the movie from September 17, 2026. A certificate confirming the voluntary deletion was placed on record.

The order recorded the submission:

“The aforesaid song, which was played as the background music, is already removed and is not played in the said movie since 17th September, 2026.”

The petitioner’s counsel did not dispute this factual position. Accepting the submission, the Bench observed that

“the issue sought to be canvassed in the petition stands redressed”.

The Court also recorded the statement made on behalf of respondent no. 3 that ₹50,000 would be voluntarily donated to the Army Welfare Fund within one week.

The acknowledgement was to be placed on record. If it was not produced within two weeks, the matter would be listed for reconsideration on the limited question of costs payable by respondent no. 3.

A Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma disposed of the PIL on October 13, 2026, observing that no further orders were required once the issue had been addressed.

The pending applications were also disposed of.
