Kerala HC Warns Former DGP Tomin Thachankary of Bail Cancellation Over Plea to Work Abroad

The Kerala High Court on November 6, 2026, strongly questioned former Director General of Police (DGP) Tomin J. Thachankary's request for permission to travel abroad for employment, despite his earlier claims of serious health problems during imprisonment.

Justice A. Badharudeen expressed concern over the apparent contradiction while hearing his application seeking relaxation of bail conditions.

Thachankary was sentenced to four years' imprisonment and fined ₹30.84 lakh by the Vigilance Court in a disproportionate assets case. On October 15, 2026, the High Court suspended his sentence and granted bail, subject to conditions, including prior permission before leaving India.

He subsequently approached the High Court seeking permission to travel abroad for work.

After examining the Jail Superintendent's report and medical records, the Court questioned how Thachankary could claim serious illnesses while in custody but seek overseas employment after securing bail.

The Court orally remarked:

"He has been admitted to the hospital from the date of admission till the date of release. He has not spent even one day in jail."

Expressing further displeasure, Justice Badharudeen said:

"Don't spread such lies before the Court. These types of cases would be treated very seriously."

The Court also warned:

"If this is the position, I may go for the option to cancel the bail also."

The High Court observed that the matter required a detailed hearing after examining the medical records and the Jail Superintendent's report.

It posted the application for further hearing on November 12, 2026.
