The Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association (KHCAA) has unanimously resolved to pursue the immediate enactment of a Lawyers Protection Act in the State following an alleged attack on the elderly parents of two advocates in Ernakulam. The decision was taken at an urgent General Body meeting held on August 14, 2026.

Background of the Incident

The incident reportedly took place at the residence of the advocates’ parents on August 13. According to the police complaint, two men allegedly entered the house and sought information about the advocates, who had represented the wife of one of them in a domestic dispute.

The complaint states that the elderly father was allegedly assaulted with a knife and sustained multiple injuries. The 79-year-old mother subsequently lodged the complaint from hospital, while her 80-year-old husband was reported to be in critical condition.

Police registered an FIR at Njarakkal Police Station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections relating to attempt to murder, causing hurt with dangerous weapons, criminal intimidation and house trespass.

KHCAA’s Resolution

Discussing the incident, the KHCAA General Body resolved to take steps towards bringing a Lawyers Protection Act into force in Kerala.

The association decided to convene a joint meeting of the presidents and secretaries of Bar Associations across the State. Its Executive Committee was also authorised to constitute a five-member committee to prepare and draft the proposed legislation, engage with the government and coordinate with Bar Associations.

The association said,

“an advocate must be able to discharge professional duties independently and fearlessly” without threats, intimidation or retaliation against the advocate or their family.

Decision

The KHCAA unanimously resolved to pursue the proposed Lawyers Protection Act without delay and authorised steps for preparing the legislation and taking up the matter with the government and other competent authorities.
