Kolkata Court Sends Three, Including Lawyer, to Police Custody for Alleged Rape of Law Student on Campus

A sessions court in Kolkata has ordered four-day police custody of three accused in the alleged rape of a law student on the campus of a south Kolkata law college.

The three accused include current law students Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay as well as Manojit Mishra, a former student who is now practising law and is a contractual employee at the college. The court passed the remand order following their arrest based on the victim's complaint.

During the remand proceedings, the court was told that "the complaint alleges that one of the three committed the crime of rape while the others abetted the crime."

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the incident took place on Wednesday evening. The victim had gone to the campus to complete some formalities when the accused lured her to the guard room.

The complaint said, "The accused took the victim to the guard room of the college campus and raped her between 7 pm and 11 pm."

On receiving the complaint, the police acted immediately and arrested the three suspects. They were then produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) at the Alipore court.

The ACJM sent the accused to four-day police custody for further investigation and interrogation.

The police have begun a detailed investigation into the incident. The college authorities are also expected to cooperate in the investigation, as the incident allegedly took place on the campus of the institute.
