Two Additional Judges:

  • Justice Budi Habung
  • Justice N. Unni Krishnan Nair

have been elevated as permanent Judges of the Gauhati High Court under Article 217 of the Constitution. Their appointments will take effect from the day they assume charge of their offices.

In a separate order, Justice Kaushik Goswami has been granted a one-year extension as an Additional Judge of the same court. His extended tenure will begin from 10 November 2025, as approved under Article 224 of the Constitution.

The Gauhati High Court, which serves Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh, has been under pressure due to a high case load. Legal experts believe that the appointment of permanent judges, along with temporary extensions, helps ensure continuity and efficiency in judicial functioning.

By regularising Justices Habung and Nair, and extending the service of Justice Goswami, the government has aimed to provide both stability and flexibility to the bench. These steps are seen as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the judiciary in the north-eastern states.
