Supreme Court Grants Relief to Ranveer Allahbadia, Stays Arrest but Imposes Show Ban Amid Controversial Remarks

The Supreme Court of India has granted a significant relief to YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, better known by his online persona BeerBiceps, by staying his arrest in the various First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against him. This decision came after the controversial remarks made by Allahbadia during an episode of the show India’s Got Latent. The case has garnered widespread attention due to the nature of the comments made by Allahbadia, leading to FIRs in Maharashtra, Assam, and Rajasthan.

On Tuesday, Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh, who were presiding over the case, granted an interim stay on Allahbadia's arrest, which had been sought after by him. The YouTuber had appealed for a consolidation of the multiple FIRs and interim protection. While the Court agreed to stay the arrest, it imposed several conditions on Allahbadia, including his cooperation with the ongoing investigations.

The Court ordered that Allahbadia must join the investigations when summoned and emphasized that he should not be represented by any lawyer during police questioning. Additionally, Allahbadia is prohibited from appearing on any shows for the time being, further restricting his professional activities

In a strongly-worded statement, the Court expressed its concern over the vulgar and obscene language used during the controversial episode. Justice Surya Kant remarked, “The words you have chosen, parents will feel ashamed. Daughters and sisters will feel ashamed. The entire society will be ashamed. These are the levels of depravity you and your henchmen have gone to.” The remarks were aimed at the panel of the show, which included Allahbadia, comedian Samay Raina, and YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani.

The Court’s concerns were not limited to the language used in the show. It also scrutinized the wider impact such actions could have on societal norms. The Bench noted that the show’s content seemed to violate the basic standards of decency, calling the behavior exhibited as “depraved.” The Court further stated that such conduct was detrimental to the public, especially when done by popular personalities like Allahbadia.

Case Background:

The controversy stems from an episode filmed on November 14, 2024, at Khar Habitat, where Allahbadia and the show’s panelists used offensive and abusive language. This led to multiple FIRs being filed across three states. Allahbadia, who has a significant following on platforms like YouTube, faced severe backlash for his comments, prompting his decision to approach the Supreme Court under Article 32, seeking protection.

During the hearing, Allahbadia’s lawyer, Advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, raised concerns about the death threats received by the YouTuber following the viral clip, including a Rs. 5 lakh bounty for cutting his tongue. However, the Court expressed no sympathy for the situation. Justice Kant, in a matter-of-fact tone, stated, “Threats are there every day. State can take any action.”

The Court also questioned the ethics behind Allahbadia’s language, asking, “Are you defending the language used?” The Bench made it clear that such threats, while disturbing, could not justify the use of vulgarity for personal gain or publicity.
