In a concerning case highlighting alleged misuse of personal relationships for extortion, the Allahabad High Court recently dealt with a writ petition that brought to light a suspected honey-trap operation involving multiple individuals, including police personnel.
Background of the Case
The matter arose in Fojiya and Others vs State of U.P. and Others, where the petitioners approached the Court through a criminal writ petition. However, after detailed arguments, counsel for the petitioners sought permission to withdraw the plea, a request that was supported by the informant’s side as well.

According to the case record, the allegations described a sequence of events where the first petitioner allegedly initiated contact with the informant through WhatsApp, developed a personal relationship, and later called him to a hotel in Bijnor. It was alleged that intimate moments were secretly recorded and later used to threaten and pressure the informant for money.
The complaint further indicated that other individuals, including two policemen and a local ward member, were allegedly involved in the sequence of events that followed. The informant claimed he was shown the video and asked to pay a substantial amount to avoid its misuse.
While allowing the withdrawal of the petition, the Division Bench of Justice J.J. Munir and Justice Tarun Saxena did not overlook the seriousness of the allegations placed before it.
The Court observed that the case reflects a “very pernicious state of affairs in society,” indicating concern over the alleged pattern of exploiting individuals through deceit and blackmail.
The bench noted that such incidents, if unchecked, could pose a broader threat to public safety and dignity. It emphasized the need for vigilance, particularly where organised methods may be used to trap individuals and extract money through fear and embarrassment.

Taking suo motu note of the situation, the Court directed the Inspector General of Police, Meerut Zone, to undertake a thorough investigation into the matter.
The IG Police was further instructed to alert district police chiefs across the zone to remain vigilant against any such organised activities. The Court specifically asked authorities to monitor whether similar patterns or groups might be operating in the region.
Additionally, the Registrar (Compliance) was directed to communicate the order to senior state authorities, including the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, and the Additional Chief Secretary (Home).
