The Andhra Pradesh High Court has directed the State authorities to take strict action against illegal and defective speed breakers across highways and district roads. The case came before the division bench of Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Ravi Cheemalapati in Writ Petition (PIL) No. 76 of 2025, filed by Thandava Yogesh, who appeared in person.
The petitioner argued that many speed breakers in Andhra Pradesh were not constructed as per the standards laid down by the Indian Road Congress (IRC). According to the earlier guidelines, speed breakers should be 3.7 meters wide, 10 centimeters in height, with a radius of 17 meters. He claimed that violations of these norms were causing inconvenience and accidents.

On behalf of the State, the Special Government Pleader, Smt. S. Pranathi, informed the court that the IRC has recently updated its specifications and the new norms would be placed on record.
Quoting the earlier official communication, the bench noted:
"A memo dated 25 February 2025 was already issued by the Chief Engineer (R & B), SH & Managing Director, APRDC, Vijayawada, directing engineers to identify and remove defective speed breakers or rectify them as per IRC standards."

The Court further observed that if there are any new guidelines from the IRC or Central Government, they must be followed in both letter and spirit. Authorities were instructed to issue a fresh circular ensuring that all existing speed breakers are modified in compliance with the updated norms.
The Public Interest Litigation was disposed of with no costs, and all pending applications were closed.
