In an urgent hearing held on Saturday, the Calcutta High Court directed the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, following violent incidents during protests against the Anti-Waqf Bill. Reports indicate that the clashes turned deadly, resulting in multiple fatalities.
Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam took swift action by forming a special division bench, consisting of Justices Soumen Sen and Raja Basu Chowdhury. This step was taken in response to an urgent petition filed by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.
Upon hearing about the violent unrest and confirmation that at least three individuals had lost their lives, the bench ordered immediate deployment of central forces to restore law and order in the area.
"The court cannot turn a blind eye to such incidents," the bench observed, stressing the importance of immediate intervention to control the deteriorating situation.
The High Court further directed the Central forces to coordinate their efforts with the West Bengal state administration to bring peace back to the region.
In addition, the court asked both the state and central governments to file detailed reports about the violence and the current situation in Murshidabad.
The matter is scheduled for further hearing on April 17.
