The Delhi High Court on Thursday (2 July) chose mediation over immediate interim relief in the defamation dispute between journalist Anjana Om Kashyap, TV Today Network Ltd., and educator Faisal Khan, popularly known as Khan Sir. The Court observed that the parties appeared willing to resolve their differences through dialogue and directed them to begin mediation the same day.

Background of the Case

The suit was filed by Anjana Om Kashyap and TV Today Network against Khan Sir and several other educators over alleged defamatory remarks made on social media following a television debate on the growing influence of online "star teachers."

The plaintiffs sought removal of the disputed content and an interim injunction, arguing that the online posts had harmed their reputation. During the hearing, the plaintiffs also raised concern over the disclosure of details relating to Kashyap's children, stating that it had led to serious security concerns and alleged threats.

Court's Observations

Justice Tushar Rao Gedela encouraged both sides to resolve the dispute outside prolonged litigation.

The Bench observed,

“It appears that parties can and may resolve disputes amicably. The parties are willing to explore the terms of settlement in case a senior mediator is appointed.”

The Court also remarked that while criticism of public figures is permissible, it should remain within acceptable limits. It suggested that objectionable words and remarks could be removed if both parties agreed.

Addressing the issue concerning the journalist's children, the Court stressed that such personal details should not become part of a public dispute. Counsel appearing for Khan Sir informed the Court that the disclosures regarding the children would be removed immediately.

Justice Gedela further reminded both sides of their public responsibilities, observing,

“You are academicians. You are teaching youngsters. This should not become a part of you.”

Court's Decision

Without granting an immediate interim injunction, the Delhi High Court referred the parties to mediation before a senior mediator to explore an amicable settlement.

The Court also issued notice on the defendants' application seeking rejection of the plaint and listed the matter for July 9, 2026, to consider the outcome of the mediation proceedings.
