Delhi High Court Rejects Vantara's Contempt Plea Seeking Deletion of Himal Southasian Article on Elephant Ill-Treatment

The Delhi High Court has dismissed a contempt petition filed by Vantara, a company led by Anant Ambani, which sought the removal of an article published on the online platform Himal Southasian. The article alleged mistreatment and transfer of elephants.

Justice Anish Dayal rejected the plea filed by Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre Society and its affiliate against Himal Southasian and its editor, Roman Gautam. The court's detailed order is still awaited.

Vantara, which operates across 3,000 acres within Reliance’s Jamnagar refinery complex, argued that Himal Southasian and its editor failed to comply with a previous order from a coordinate bench. That earlier order noted that the article contained elements of sensationalism in journalism.

Despite this, the publication remained accessible online, leading Vantara to contend that Himal Southasian should have deleted the article as directed.

In the contempt petition, Vantara stated,

“The Respondent No. 1 and 2 are therefore guilty of breaching the direction and/or expectation contained in the Order dated 27.08.2024. The Respondent No. 1 is administered and managed by the Respondent No. 2. The Respondent No. 1 and 2 have willfully and blatantly breached the clearly implicit direction and expectation contained in the Order dated 27.08.2024.”

Himal Southasian was represented in court by advocates Vrinda Grover and Soutik Banerjee.
