Ex-IIS Officer Nitin Nath Singh Granted Bail by Allahabad High Court in Wife's Murder Case

The Allahabad High Court has granted bail to former Indian Information Service (IIS) officer Nitin Nath Singh, accused of murdering his wife, advocate Renu Sinha, in September 2023. The decision came from Justice Siddharth, who acknowledged Singh’s senior citizenship and concluded he was neither a hardened criminal nor a flight risk, especially given his established assets and ties.

According to the prosecution, Singh allegedly strangled his wife after an argument over the sale of their Noida residence. The FIR, lodged by Renu Sinha’s brother Ajay Kumar, claimed that the victim had been unresponsive to calls, prompting him and a family friend to alert the police. Upon breaking into the house, police found Renu Sinha’s body in the bathroom with visible injuries. Singh was later found hiding in a storeroom with cigarettes and water.

“The applicant is in jail since 11.09.2023…he appears to be a senior citizen and not a hardened criminal who can pose any threat to the safety of society,” the court stated.

The defense argued that the FIR was delayed by eight hours without sufficient explanation. They also raised doubts about the timing and location of Singh’s arrest, pointing to inconsistencies in the official record. They further alleged that Ajay Kumar pressured the couple to transfer their property to him and could have been involved, as he possessed keys to the house.

The case became further complicated when it was revealed that the couple had already negotiated the property’s sale for ₹4.5 crore and received ₹55 lakhs as earnest money. According to the defense, this conflicted with Ajay Kumar’s intentions.

On the other hand, the prosecution emphasized Singh's motive, pointing to strained marital relations and the presence of past criminal charges. In 2016, Renu Sinha had filed a police complaint against Singh under Sections 323, 504, and 506 IPC. Witnesses, including domestic help and neighborhood residents, testified that Singh and his wife often had conflicts, and CCTV footage confirmed he had not left the house on the day of the incident.

The court acknowledged these arguments but focused on legal principles and trial delays.

“Considering the larger mandate of Article 21 of the Constitution and overcrowding in jails, the applicant has made out a case for bail,” the court observed.

Singh was granted bail with strict conditions, including surrendering his passport, appearing in court on all designated dates, and not tampering with evidence or threatening witnesses. The court also warned that any misuse of bail could result in its cancellation.
