Intelligence Officer Gets Bail in Kerala High Court in Alleged Suicide Abetment Case

The Kerala High Court, on July 10, 2025, granted bail to Sukanth Suresh, an intelligence officer accused of abetting the suicide of his colleague and girlfriend, Megha Madhusoodhanan. Justice Bechu Kurien Thomas passed the order in Bail Application No. 8234/2025, observing that the continued custody of the accused was not required for the ongoing investigation.

“The main purpose of the investigation has already been carried out,” the Court noted. “Further custody is not necessary since there is no chance of the petitioner influencing the victim or tampering with the evidence.”

Allegations by the Prosecution

According to the prosecution, the accused sexually exploited Megha under the false promise of marriage and later withdrew from the relationship, leading her to take the extreme step. Megha, who was working as a Security Assistant with the Bureau of Immigration at Trivandrum Airport, reportedly died by suicide on March 24, 2025, by jumping in front of a train at Pettah Railway Station.

The victim’s family alleged that she was not only emotionally but also financially exploited by Sukanth. A substantial part of her salary was allegedly transferred to him. After the relationship ended, she was reportedly devastated, which led to her death.

On the other hand, Sukanth claimed that family pressure on Megha to end the relationship drove her to suicide.

“Though the petitioner is alleged to have sexually exploited the victim under a false promise of marriage and abetted her suicide, appropriate conditions can be imposed to prevent him from fleeing justice,” said the Court.

Court's Decision

The Court considered that:

  • Sukanth has been in custody since May 27, 2025.
  • His anticipatory bail was earlier rejected on May 26, 2025.
  • The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report of the mobile phone is still pending.
  • Despite the seriousness of the charges under Sections 69, 318(4), 316(3), 108, and 249 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, continued detention was deemed unnecessary.
