Kerala High Court Issues Fresh Notice to Former MLA PV Anvar in Plea for CBI Probe on Phone Tapping Allegations

The Kerala High Court has issued a fresh notice to former Nilambur MLA PV Anvar in connection with a Writ Petition (Criminal) that seeks a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into alleged illegal phone tapping activities.

The matter came up for hearing before Justice P.V. Kunhikrishnan. During the proceedings, Advocate K.M. Firoz appeared on behalf of PV Anvar, who has been named as the 13th respondent in the petition. The Court was informed that an earlier notice sent to Anvar had been returned without being claimed. Accordingly, the High Court directed the issuance of a new notice.

“The earlier notice issued to the respondent was returned unclaimed. Hence, a fresh notice is to be sent,” the Court observed during the hearing.

Background of the Case

The petitioner, a businessman, alleged in his affidavit that PV Anvar publicly admitted during a 2024 press conference that he had tapped the phone calls of senior police officers, political leaders, and others. The affidavit further states that the petitioner learned that his own phone conversations were also tapped by the former MLA.

Following this revelation, the petitioner filed a written complaint with the Police Chief and other relevant authorities. A criminal case was subsequently registered, according to the petitioner’s affidavit submitted before the High Court.

“The petitioner came to know that his phone was also illegally tapped. A formal complaint was made, and a crime was registered,” the affidavit stated.

The petitioner emphasized that the accused persons include top-level police officials and politicians. Due to their involvement, he believes that a free and fair investigation may not be possible by the local law enforcement agencies. Thus, the plea seeks the involvement of a central agency like the CBI to ensure impartiality and justice.

“Since influential officers and politicians are involved, only a national-level agency can ensure a fair probe,” the petitioner argued in court.

The Writ Petition (Criminal) No. 1366 of 2024, titled Murugesh Narendran v. Union of India and others, has been filed through Advocate Peeyus A. Kottam.

The matter is currently pending before the Kerala High Court, with further developments awaited after the issuance of the fresh notice.
