The Madhya Pradesh High Court has granted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) one week to respond to the regular bail application filed by former district judge Giribala Singh in the case concerning the death of her daughter-in-law, Twisha Sharma.
Justice Ajay Kumar Nirankari allowed the CBI counsel’s request for time and listed the matter for September 21, 2026.
Background
Twisha Sharma, aged 33, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, 2026. The case was registered under Sections 80(2), 85 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
The investigation was subsequently handed over to the CBI following the intervention of the Supreme Court. The CBI had earlier taken Giribala Singh and her son into custody during the investigation. Her earlier anticipatory bail was also set aside by the High Court.
In her regular bail application, Giribala Singh disputes the allegations against her. The plea states that there was no transaction showing that she received money from Twisha’s parents and claims that her son had instead transferred ₹7.5 lakh to Twisha’s accounts.
She has also relied on medical statements concerning Twisha’s alleged depression and stated that she provided voice samples to the investigating agency for around three hours in July 2026.
The plea further states that she is 64 years old and that her custodial interrogation is no longer required.
The deceased’s father has opposed the grant of regular bail.
At the present stage, the High Court has not decided whether Giribala Singh should be released on bail. The Court only granted the CBI additional time to place its response on record.
The Court accordingly directed the matter to be listed on September 21.
