Mumbai Court Grants Bail to 12 Accused in Kunal Kamra Show Vandalism Case

A Mumbai court in Bandra has granted bail to 12 individuals accused of vandalizing a comedy venue where comedian Kunal Kamra had performed on March 23. The incident took place after a group of political workers allegedly stormed the venue, causing significant damage in response to remarks made by Kamra during his performance.

According to reports, the arrested individuals are alleged to be workers of the Shiv Sena. The police detained them for ransacking the comedy club and issuing threats against Kamra. The controversy erupted after Kamra’s skit, in which he reportedly referred to Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a "traitor." Though Kamra did not explicitly name Shinde, his statements were interpreted as direct criticism of the Deputy CM.

Following the vandalism, the Mumbai police swiftly arrested Shiv Sena functionary Rahul Kanal and 11 others. The accused were booked for destruction of property and unlawful assembly. A senior officer from Khar Police Station confirmed that the arrested individuals were granted cash bail, allowing them temporary relief from custody.

Meanwhile, a separate case has been lodged against comedian Kunal Kamra, with authorities currently investigating his statements. Speaking to Live Law, a police official stated:

"The investigation is ongoing, and legal action will be taken based on the findings. Both the vandalism case and the complaint against Kamra are being handled as per due process."

The incident has sparked debates over freedom of speech and the limits of political criticism. Supporters of Kunal Kamra argue that comedians should have the right to express their views without facing violent repercussions. On the other hand, political groups opposing Kamra claim that his remarks were provocative and disrespectful.
