Punjab & Haryana High Court Seeks Punjab Government's Response on Detention of Farmer Leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal

The Punjab & Haryana High Court has taken cognizance of a habeas corpus plea filed against the alleged illegal detention of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. The court has sought a response from the Punjab Government and the Director General of Police (DGP) regarding the matter. The petition was presented on March 19, 2025, urging the release of Dallewal, who was reportedly taken into custody without prior notice.

While issuing the notice, Justice Manisha Batra remarked:

"This petition has been received at 6:45 pm making prayer for issuance of a writ in the nature of habeas corpus for release of detenue Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is the farmer leader of Joint Forum Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (non-political), and is in the illegal custody of the respondents."

The plea was filed by another farmer leader, Gurmukh Singh, who alleged that Dallewal was unlawfully detained while returning from a meeting with a central delegation led by the Union Agriculture Minister. Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike for over 100 days, was part of the seventh round of discussions between farmer leaders and the government.

According to the petition, Dallewal and his convoy were intercepted near Jagatpura, Mohali, while returning to the protest site at Shambhu and Khanauri borders. It is alleged that he, along with several other farmer leaders, was taken into custody without any formal notice or explanation. This led to a confrontation between farmers and the Punjab Police.

The plea further claims:

"300 to 400 members of the farmer organization are also unaccounted for."

The petitioner has requested the court to direct the government to produce the detainee before the court and sought any additional relief as deemed necessary.

The court has listed the matter for hearing on March 24, 2025, for further consideration.

The plea was filed by Advocates Gurmohan Preet Singh, Angrej Singh, and Kanwarjit Singh on behalf of Gurmukh Singh.
