The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has voiced strong support for Additional District and Sessions Judge Tabassum Khan of Madhya Pradesh, condemning the alleged threats and hostile social media campaign that surfaced after one of her judicial orders.
The lawyers' body said protecting judges from intimidation is essential for maintaining public confidence in the justice system.
In a statement issued on July 3, the SCBA expressed concern over reports that Judge Khan became the target of threats and abusive online messages after delivering a judgment while discharging her official duties. Reports also suggest that an FIR has been registered and additional security has been provided to the judicial officer.
The Association said such incidents raise serious concerns because judicial officers are expected to decide cases independently, based only on law and evidence.
Extending its solidarity to Judge Khan, the SCBA urged the Madhya Pradesh High Court and the State Government to ensure her safety and conduct a thorough investigation into the reported incidents.
The Association observed,
"Judicial officers must be able to perform their duties without fear, pressure or intimidation. The independence of the judiciary is a constitutional value that deserves full protection."
It further stated that any person found responsible for issuing threats or promoting hatred against a judicial officer should be dealt with strictly in accordance with law after a fair investigation.
The issue has also drawn the attention of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which has taken suo motu cognisance and sought information from the State authorities regarding the measures adopted for the judge's security and the progress of the investigation.
The SCBA reiterated that the district judiciary is a vital part of India's justice delivery system and said judicial officers should be able to carry out their responsibilities independently and impartially without external pressure.
