"She Stayed With You, You Must Answer": Kerala HC to Intelligence Officer in Suicide Case

The Kerala High Court, on Friday, 4th April, declined to grant interim protection from arrest to Intelligence Officer Sukanth, who is allegedly linked to the death of his colleague and partner Megha Madhusoodhanan.

Megha was working as a Security Assistant/Executive at the Bureau of Immigration, Trivandrum Airport. Her tragic death was reported as a suicide after she allegedly jumped in front of a train at Pettah Railway Station.

The family of the deceased made serious allegations, claiming that:

  • Megha was financially exploited by Sukanth.
  • A major part of her salary was regularly transferred to him.
  • She took the extreme step of suicide after he withdrew from the relationship.

Due to the possibility of arrest, Sukanth moved the Kerala High Court, seeking anticipatory bail.

In his petition, Sukanth submitted the following points:

  • He shared an intense and close relationship with Megha.
  • The two were in a live-in relationship, residing together in an apartment near Nedumbassery Airport, where he worked.
  • He argued that her suicide was due to her parents’ disapproval of their relationship.

However, Justice P. V. Kunhikrishnan was not convinced by this explanation and made strong oral observations during the hearing.

“According to you, she is staying with you. Then why is she committing suicide? It's your mistake… I can understand, if she is with them (parents). But you admit that she was with you. The girl committed suicide. You are responsible…. A lady committed suicide. Answer should come from you first.”

With these remarks, the judge held the Intelligence Officer accountable for providing answers, especially since the deceased was living with him.

The court, therefore, refused to grant interim relief, keeping the Intelligence Officer open to arrest and further investigation.
