The Punjab & Haryana High Court has dismissed the plea for interim bail filed by Gurmeet Singh, accused in a serious criminal case, who sought four weeks of relief to sow agricultural crops for the upcoming season. The petitioner had argued that farming is his only source of livelihood.
“Without commenting upon powers of this Court to grant bail, this Court is not inclined to grant interim bail to the applicant on the ground mentioned in the application, as there may be some other family members to sow the crops,” observed Hon’ble Justice Anoop Chitkara.

The judge further noted the practical concern, stating:
“Moreover, if he is granted interim bail to sow crop, in that case, who will look after the crop after that?”
Gurmeet Singh had approached the court seeking a temporary four-week bail to carry out seasonal agricultural activities, citing that it forms the sole basis of his family’s livelihood. The State did not dispute this reason but opposed granting interim relief on this ground alone.
The High Court ultimately held that no justifiable ground had been made to allow interim bail in this case and accordingly dismissed the petition.
