Telangana High Court Addresses Alleged Aadhaar-Based Denial of Treatment at State Hospital

On February 24, 2025, the Telangana High Court examined a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning Osmania General Hospital's alleged refusal to treat a patient who couldn't present an Aadhaar card. The division bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Renuka Yara, questioned the state's counsel on the permissibility of such actions.

The petitioner, advocate Srinivas Byreddy, argued that the hospital's insistence on an Aadhaar card for treatment is illegal and violates Articles 14, 19, and 21 of the Indian Constitution. He recounted an incident reported in the Eenadu Telugu daily on February 16, where a woman named Pramila, who resorted to begging to support herself and her six-year-old daughter after losing her husband and son, was allegedly denied admission and treatment by the hospital due to the absence of an Aadhaar card. The report mentioned that Pramila had been lying outside the hospital for ten days in a dire condition.

In response, Special Government Pleader S. Rahul Reddy, representing the state, assured the court that Pramila had been treated even before the news article's publication. He contended that misinformation was being disseminated and requested time to present relevant documents to the bench.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for February 28, 2025, to further deliberate on the matter.
