CJI Gavai on Maharashtra Protocol Lapse: “Trivial Issue, Let It Rest – All Have Expressed Regret”

Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai, has urged that the matter related to the protocol lapse during his recent visit to Maharashtra should not be exaggerated, emphasizing that all concerned parties have already expressed regret.

“A trivial issue should not be blown out of proportion. CJI has requested everyone that the matter be given a quietus.”

This statement was released through an official press note in response to media reports regarding protocol issues during his visit to Maharashtra. The CJI’s comments come after reports emerged that top officials such as the Maharashtra Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police (DGP), and the Mumbai Police Commissioner were absent during his first official visit to his home state as the Chief Justice of India.

“News items are being published in the media regarding protocol issues during the visit of Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India to Maharashtra. All concerned have already expressed regrets.”

Justice Gavai attended a function in Maharashtra where he acknowledged the absence of these key officials. However, he maintained a calm stance and clarified that the issue is not serious enough to warrant further attention.

The situation also drew support from Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, who yesterday backed the CJI after he expressed displeasure over the protocol lapse. This support further highlighted the significance of respecting constitutional authorities during official state visits.

Despite the uproar in media, CJI Gavai’s firm and composed response aims to settle the matter peacefully.

“Let us not blow it out of proportion,” the CJI reiterated, requesting all parties to bring the issue to a close.
