Delhi HC Judge Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma to Join Calcutta HC Following SC Collegium’s Decision

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the transfer of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma from the Delhi High Court to the Calcutta High Court. The decision was made as part of the routine judicial transfer process to ensure efficient administration in the judiciary.

Justice Sharma, who was a part of the Delhi Higher Judicial Service, was elevated to the Delhi High Court in February 2022. His tenure has been marked by significant judicial contributions, and his transfer is in line with the Collegium’s policy of maintaining judicial balance across high courts.

Collegium's Recommendation

The Supreme Court Collegium, which oversees the appointment and transfer of high court judges, made this recommendation as part of its regular assessment of judicial postings. Such transfers are aimed at ensuring proper distribution of experienced judges across different high courts in India.

"The transfer of judges is essential to maintain judicial efficiency and ensure a fair distribution of experienced justices across various high courts," stated a legal expert familiar with the process.

Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma’s Career and Background

Justice Sharma has had an illustrious career in the judiciary. Before being elevated to the Delhi High Court, he served in the Delhi Higher Judicial Service, where he was known for his expertise in handling complex legal matters. Since his appointment as a High Court judge, he has presided over several important cases.

His transfer to the Calcutta High Court is expected to strengthen the judicial system there, given his vast experience and legal acumen.

Why Are Judges Transferred?

Judicial transfers are a standard practice and are recommended based on various factors, including:

  • Administrative requirements of different high courts
  • Workload balancing to ensure equal distribution of judicial expertise
  • Policy decisions by the Supreme Court Collegium

These transfers do not impact the judicial independence of the judges but are meant to ensure a more efficient legal system across the country.

What’s Next?

Once the transfer recommendation is approved by the President of India, Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma will assume his new role in the Calcutta High Court. The legal fraternity will closely follow the transition, as Justice Sharma brings his extensive judicial experience to his new posting.

"Transfers like these are crucial for the efficient functioning of the judiciary, and Justice Sharma's move will undoubtedly contribute to the Calcutta High Court's judicial strength," said a senior advocate.
