At a recent event organised by the Washington Telangana Association in Redmond, Washington, Supreme Court Judge Justice Surya Kant emphasised the integrating and democratic role played by the Indian Judiciary in both national and international contexts.
“The Judiciary of India plays an integrating role in upholding the diverse and democratic character of the nation,” – Justice Surya Kant
He said that the Judiciary not only interprets and protects the Constitution but also connects citizens in India and abroad around shared constitutional values. It ensures that principles such as fraternity, equality and human dignity are consistently upheld, thereby keeping the rule of law at the heart of Indian democracy.
Justice Surya Kant pointed out that Indian Courts are much more than mere legal forums. Through their reasoned judgments and moral authority, they provide a strong vision of justice that binds the country together despite its vast diversity. For non-resident Indians (NRIs), this commitment becomes a matter of pride and confidence, reassuring them that their legal rights and values are not only protected but also affirmed within India’s legal system.
He elaborated on the role of the judiciary in addressing specific challenges faced by the expatriate community, including issues of property disputes, inheritance, custody and marital conflict. The judiciary has, through procedural adaptations and acceptance of cross-border complexities, made justice more accessible to Indians living abroad.
“India’s commitment to justice is not confined to its borders – it reaches all those who hold the country in their hearts.” – Justice Surya Kant
Justice Surya Kant highlighted how, in some cases, the judiciary has also extended protection of fundamental rights to non-resident citizens, ensuring that they are treated with fairness and equality under the law.
He acknowledged the Indian diaspora as one of the largest and most influential communities globally, with over 30 million Indians living across various continents. He lauded their deep attachment to India’s values, traditions and democratic spirit.
“Our shared heritage is preserved not only through culture, but also through institutions like the judiciary that uphold our democratic values.” – Justice Surya Kant

Concluding his speech, he emphasised that while tradition connects us to our roots, it is the constitutional framework that safeguards our justice, fairness and inclusiveness. And of all institutions, it is the judiciary that embodies and safeguards these principles, both in India and among the global diaspora.
